Ecology of Drosera × snyderi
As a hybrid between Drosera dielsiana and Drosera nidiformis, Drosera × snyderi shares ecological traits with its parent species, both of which are native to South Africa. It thrives in nutrient-poor, acidic soils where carnivory provides a competitive advantage.
Habitat & Distribution
- Likely to occur in similar habitats as its parent species, including wet, sandy, or peaty soils in grasslands and fynbos regions.
- Prefers open, sunny locations with high humidity and consistent moisture.
Carnivory & Prey Capture
- Uses glandular tentacles to secrete mucilage, trapping small insects like gnats and flies.
- Absorbs nutrients from digested prey to compensate for poor soil conditions.
Adaptations
- Tolerates fluctuating moisture levels but requires constant access to water.
- Exhibits a rapid response to prey, curling its leaves slightly to enhance digestion.
- Capable of self-sustaining in appropriate environments but depends on controlled cultivation outside of its natural range.
Ecological Role
- Contributes to insect population control by preying on small arthropods.
- Provides a habitat for small invertebrates and interacts with pollinators through its flowers.
Since Drosera × snyderi is a hybrid, its occurrence in the wild is rare, and it is mostly maintained in cultivation by carnivorous plant enthusiasts.
Care Guide for Drosera × snyderi
Drosera × snyderi is a relatively easy-to-grow hybrid sundew, requiring similar conditions to its parent species (D. dielsiana and D. nidiformis). It thrives in high humidity, bright light, and nutrient-poor soil.
1. Light
- Prefers bright, indirect light or direct sunlight for a few hours daily.
- Artificial lighting (e.g., LED grow lights) works well, especially indoors.
- More light results in a redder leaf coloration.
2. Soil & Potting
- Use a 50:50 mix of peat moss and perlite or sand. However we use Peat moss free media still under trial. Plants available are in Peat and Sphagnum free media.
- Avoid regular high nutrient potting soil, as it contains nutrients that can harm the plant.
- A deep pot helps maintain moisture and supports root development.
3. Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist with distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water. Sydney water is also fine.
- Use the tray method: Place the pot in a shallow tray of water to keep the soil damp.
- Avoid tap water high in chemicals in some areas of Aus, as minerals and chlorine can be harmful.
4. Humidity & Temperature
- Prefers high humidity (60–80%), but can tolerate lower levels with proper watering.
- Ideal temperature range: 15–30°C (59–86°F).
- Protect from frost; it is not a cold-hardy species.
5. Feeding & Nutrition
- Traps small insects like gnats and flies for nutrients.
- If grown indoors without access to prey, feed it dried bloodworms or small insects occasionally.
- Avoid overfeeding, as excess food can lead to mold or rot.
6. Dormancy
- Drosera × snyderi does not require a dormancy period and grows year-round in stable conditions.
7. Repotting & Propagation
- Repot every 1–2 years to refresh the soil and prevent mineral buildup.
- Can be propagated by leaf cuttings, root cuttings, or seeds if available.
By maintaining these conditions, Drosera × snyderi will thrive and continue capturing insects effectively.
Note:
- Protect your local biodiversity, do not release any plant into your local environment even if native. Plants from cultivated sources may not be of genetic local provenance and interfere with local population ecology and genetics
- We do our best to check for hitch hikers before sending but we can't guarantee there wont be any. We suggest all plants be quarantined to contain any potential hitchhikers (algae to aquatic & land snails/inverts ) no matter the supplier
- Apologies we cannot send plants internationally to WA, TAS or NT (Biosecurity)
- Please pay for plants/items by 1pm Saturday to give us time to package the plants before post day Mondays. Payment after 1pm Saturday will mean plants posted the following week. If there is a public holiday during the post week we will post the following week to avoid the plant spending excess time in transit
- Be aware we cannot claim responsibility for delayed times in postage.
- We do our best to carefully package & post on Sundays/Mondays to minimise delays in transit. We care about our plant life some of which are rare, we want the plants to arrive to you in the best possible condition. But please note some factors are out of our control especially in current times
Happy Growing
